Digital Peace Now

Building a global movement to stop cyberwarfare.

Strategy • Creative Direction • Design • Copywriting

Nations are using the grey area in international law to get away with daring cyberattacks on their political adversaries.

Over 50% of the planet has internet access, and more are logging on each day. Digital Peace Now’s goal is to empower these digital citizens to demand that world leaders protect our digital world against the threat of cyberwarfare.

Given that the issue can feel overwhelming, the brand strategy is rooted in effective positive change starting with education and building a sense of agency in the audience. In addition, the visuals draw inspiration from universal symbols of hope and change, signaling that real change is possible.

The campaign has since evolved into a non-profit with a board of internationally respected experts in digital rights and ethics, and has participated in events including the U.N.’s International Governance Forum (IGF), MozFest, and the Alliance for Peace Building’s PeaceCon.

In the spirit of Gerald Holtom’s Peace Sign, the Digital Peace Now logo is rooted in digital sign systems: ASCII code and Unicode. The right bar arrow, in this instance symbolizing forward movement, is taken from Unicode and the digital peace sign marries Holtom’s peace symbol with a classic networking icon.

Infusing the internationally known peace symbol with symbolic language native to the digital world directly speaks to the issue of Digital Peace. Our connectivity is at the center of the Digital Peace movement: it is simultaneously what we must fight to preserve and what is being leveraged against us during cyberattacks.

Digital Peace Now’s video series, The Navigation Bar, features global ambassadors, Raj Burli and Gurmehar Kaur, breaking down the issue of cyberwarfare as they travel through the virtual world.

Launched during COVID restrictions and including talent and production work across three continents, the series itself is a testament to the powerful role the internet plays in bringing us closer together regardless of our physical distance.
